Chapter 7

The Spoiled Prince

Cain stared in amazement when Star slid the dagger from the sentry’s sheath and summarily slit his throat. He was impressed at the pup’s fearlessness, not to mention its savagery, even if it wasn’t actually a man-dog. By the time the soldier lay face down in his own hot blood, his piss dampening the sand beneath his hips; Star was snatching the key from the man’s waistband.

You may be a spoiled eunuch, but you have the heart of a soldier.

Swiftly, Star unlocked the cage, allowing Cain to crawl out. “Good work,” Cain said, grudgingly.

“That was a truly disgusting experience, sucking that soldier’s dirty cock and sticking my nose into his smelly arse.” Star looked up into Cain’s face. “But I did it for you, Master,” the pup added, moderating its tone.”

Cain cuffed the pup around the head for its insolence, then shoved it to the ground and watched while it licked his feet.

“Forgive me, Master. I’ll go back into that tent and lick every smelly backside in there if it’s your pleasure that I should do so. Give me your orders, Master. I am at your command. I’m your man-dog. Let me continue, at least for now.”

“I suppose you can. But act like a man-dog and obey me like a man-dog. Do you hear?”

Star nodded.

Cain turned and began to jog away from the camp in the direction of the dune, knowing the man-dog would follow on his heels. Every now and then he looked back to ensure that no one had been alerted to their escape.

The horse stood on the distant side of the huge sand dune waiting patiently. While Star sat close by watching, Cain grabbed his pack and pulled out his leather trousers and shirt. He dressed in them quickly and then pulled on his boots, lacing them up tight. Finally, he strapped on both sword belts, giving him a sword for each hand.

“I still have to get the Prince,” Cain said, to no one in particular. He took a water bottle from the pack and drank long. When he had quenched his thirst he poured a bowlful of water for the pup and placed it on the sand. “Drink, Star,” he ordered.

The pup scampered forward and lapped up the water thirstily while Cain sat on the sand watching. “No wonder you didn’t like man-dog food. A eunuch from a palace!”

When its thirst was quenched, the pup sat back on its heels and looked at him. Cain was actually growing quite fond of it, especially after seeing it make a kill. “You surprised me, pup, the way you killed that Plainsman. I didn’t realize you could kill so efficiently.”

A little smile played about the pup’s mouth, but it did not make the mistake of speaking.

“You could be useful to me—until I return you to Earth, that is.” A high pitched whining rose up from the pup.

Cain chuckled. “You have that man-dog whining down pat. But I will say this, Star, you have courage. You’ve proved that, and courage is a thing I like, in a man or a man-dog.
